While it may take gift cards years to expire, experts say it's still wise to spend them quickly. Some cards — especially generic cash cards from Visa or MasterCard — will start accruing inactivity fees if they're not used for a year, which eats away at their value.

So What Happens To Unspent Gift Cards? The simple answer is that the issuing company or retailer gets to benefit from that. Once a gift card reaches its validity period and it's still unused or there is a leftover balance, the issuing company gets a certain amount back.

In some cases, your gift cards won't be usable at all. This all depends on the store and the reason it is closing. When companies file for bankruptcy, they can only continue accepting gift cards if they ask the bankruptcy court for permission and the court authorizes it.

For the most part, companies tend not to allow the return or exchange of gift cards unless required by state law — more on that further below. There are exceptions with certain stores, though. For example, Gap allows customers to return unused physical gift cards and cancel scheduled e-gift cards for a refund.

Simply put, a gift code or a gift card code is the primary number on a gift card. For Visa® or Mastercard® gift cards, the code is typically a 16-digit number embossed in raised-lettering on the front of the card–just like you would see on a debit or credit card.
