If you've been a victim of fraud, identity theft, or deceptive business practices, you can report them to the Federal Trade Commission. In 2022 alone, the FTC was able to issue more than $392 million in refunds to people who lost money to illegal business practices.
After you notify your bank about the scam, it will normally have to refund you within five working days. However, depending on the complexity of the case, if your bank needs extra time to gather additional evidence from you, or make enquiries with the bank on the other end, it will have up to 35 working days instead.
Did a scammer make an unauthorized transfer from your bank account? Contact your bank and tell them it was an unauthorized debit or withdrawal. Ask them to reverse the transaction and give you your money back.
Your bank should refund any money stolen from you as a result of fraud and identity theft. They should do this as soon as possible - ideally by the end of the next working day after you report the problem.
Many banks and cards will cover scams and return lost money, so ask them for a refund or to reverse the transaction. If you've only given personal information, it could still be used to steal your identity. Turn on credit fraud monitoring or, if you're able, freeze your credit.
Bank fraud charges can range from misdemeanors to felonies depending on the amount of money and sophistication of the fraud. Cases involving over $1 million may face up to 30 years in prison under federal bank fraud laws .
If the bank still won't refund your money, it's time to talk to a lawyer. Federal law gives you rights in this situation. EFTA gives damages of up to $1,000 as a penalty even if you have no other damages at all.
But if these numbers get into the wrong hands, you could fall victim to severe financial fraud. If someone has your bank account and routing number, they could make unauthorized ACH transfers and payments, create counterfeit checks and even launder money through your account.
In other cases, such as work-from-home scams or lottery fraud, fraudsters target bank accounts. If you lose money, try contacting bank officials. If your case is complicated, and you're unsure where to report it, you can file a complaint on the Cybercrime portal.
How do I get back at a scammer?
Report the Scam: Report the scam to your local law enforcement and relevant authorities. They are responsible for handling criminal matters. Document Everything: Gather evidence related to the scam, including emails, messages, phone call records, and any other correspondence.
Federal investigations into online scams can take a significant amount of time. The FBI, USPIS and USSS all have very stringent guidelines they must follow in order to build a successful case. This often means that these agencies must gather a large amount of evidence before they can make an arrest.
You might feel vulnerable and helpless, as well as a host of other emotions such as shame and embarrassment, anxiety, guilt, depression and fear, anger, grief, and a loss of trust and sense of security.
Some victims of financial fraud are upset for a few days and move on while others may develop full-fledged Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Some victims may have an uncomfortable relationship with money for years after experiencing financial fraud.
Consider changing your family member's email address and phone number, especially if contact from the scammer continues. Their telephone provider may agree to change their number for free. If a physical address has been given, seek advice from local police.

The easiest way to become a victim of a bank scam is to share your banking info — e.g., account numbers, PIN codes, social security number — with someone you don't know well and trust. If someone asks for sensitive banking details, proceed with caution.

How long does it take for a bank to refund stolen money?
